MY SERVICE TO MY COUNTRY
With Memorial Day just behind us, let’s talk about military service. I bet there are a number of you in the Insider community who have served on active duty, the reserves, or who have had relatives do so.
As for me, I served in the United States Air Force during the Persian Gulf era from 1990 – 1995. I am often asked what I flew. The answer is a desk! I was what is called an ”Admin Weenie.” My duty was that of a health services (hospital) administrator. I participated in all kinds of peacetime and wartime exercises. The coolest was being part of a team that assembled a field surgical hospital (a MASH unit) from a box, of which I then was the administrator.
What about you? Let me know about any military service you or a family member provided.
THE ORIGIN OF MEMORIAL DAY
As we get to know each other, you will discover that I enjoy history. Here’s some background on Memorial Day I found interesting and hope you do, too. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, was borne out of the Civil War as a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. With the Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971, Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday in May by almost every state.
