My second “real” job was with a Fortune 500 company. My path there began with research on the healthcare industry where I intended to pursue a managerial career.
My company target list included Humana which owned a hospital where I lived. As I networked in a local young professional group, I met a hospital employee. He informed me of a new management internship program at the corporate headquarters.
I cold-called the corporate office’s HR department, expressed my interest in the program, and said that I’d be in town the following week and available to interview for it in person if it worked with their schedule.
Everything aligned for me, and that program was my entryway to the Fortune 500. My experience taught me three things:

First, understand the industry and the top companies where you want to work.

Second, make connections with people in that industry and companies in that field.

Third, take the initiative and follow up on leads and recommendations that come your way.
