Do you know what they are? It has to do with the calendar.  It specifically has to do with the transition from the month of March to the month of April.

The last three days of March have a reputation for being stormy. Scottish folklore indicates that the last three days of March were borrowed from April so that March might extend his power. 

Here’s a Scottish proverb about these specific days:

“March borrow it from April

Three days, and they were ill:

The first was frost, the second was snaw [snow]🌨️,

The third was cauld [cold] as ever’t could blaw [blow].”

According to my research, there is a Spanish story about the borrowing days, too. In it, a shepherd promised March a lamb if he would temper the winds to suit the shepherd’s flocks. 

Once the request was granted, the shepherd refused to pay. For revenge, March borrowed three days from April, in which fiercer winds than ever blew to punish the culprit.
